Pet stores usually don't tell their customers this. They are short-lived anyway, living only 3 or 4 years, but in captivity they don't usually make it past 6 months (about the time it takes to starve to death). They're filter-feeders and require a LOT of planktonic food. They are not photosynthetic, like their expensive giant clam cousins, and can't rely on your tank's lighting to supplement them with nourishment. Without photosynthetic support, they have to rely solely on their own ability to find and filter tiny particles of the right size/flavor for ingestion. Your scallop may also be stressed because it is being picked on by something else in your tank, such as crabs or other scavengers living in your rockwork.
